Ballot Count Process
SEIU Local 1000 election process provides the cornerstone of our democratically elected union leadership. Voting is by secret ballot, ballots are sent to all members’ homes, and return postage is paid.. The ballot count is open and observable by candidates and members. Administration of the election is provided by Intraform, Inc and the ballot count will be conducted by Martin and Chapman, Inc. – both are certified by the Secretary of State and both currently handle the PERS Board elections.
In order to provide members with ongoing election information, we will post daily reports of the total number of ballots received by each DLC. The daily posting will begin upon receipt of the first returns. The final results of the ballot count will be posted on this website by May 23, 2008.
Members and candidates are also invited to observe the opening of the ballot envelopes and the ballot count held at the election office of Intraform, Inc., 1321 Howe Avenue, Ste. 200. Ballots will be opened May 21 beginning at 9:00 am and the ballot count will be held May 22 beginning at 10:00 am.
Who Votes?
SEIU Local 1000 members in good standing receive a ballot.
• Every member votes for the statewide officers,
• Every member votes for their respective DLC President, DLC Chief Steward, DLC Secretary/Treasurer,
• Only members of the respective bargaining unit can vote for that unit’s District Bargaining Unit Representative,
• Only members of the respective Local of a DLC can vote for that Local’s Senior Steward
The ballot count is structured so that votes for DBUR positions or senior steward positions by members outside the respective constituency will be easily determined and ruled inappropriate by the Election Committee. However, the entire ballot will not be invalidated if the DBUR vote is invalidated.
Invalid ballots include:
• The ballot arrives after the deadline.
• The sender is no longer a member in good standing.
• Two ballots are received from the same person, thus invalidating the first ballot received.
• The return envelope has no signature.
• There are comments or other extraneous marks on the ballot.
