Write a letter to your legislator
Writing a letter to your legislator is one of the most effective ways to communicate your opinions and/or concerns on legislation. A simple letter can go a long way in influencing the outcome of legislation that is most important to you. Here are some tips that can help you write a constructive letter to your legislator. Research the bill
After you have found legislation that affects or concerns you, research the bill. You can research all legislation by going to California's Official Bill Information website and typing in the bill number or the bill author's name. Once you have located bill, you can review the bill's status, history, bill text, analysis, and vote records. Additional resources can be found on the Legislative Resources page.
Find your legislator
Once you have background information on the bill, it is time to look up your legislator. You can find your legislator by clicking here.
Write the letter
Now that you have your bill research and legislator's information, it is time to write the letter. Below is a template and sample letter to assist you in writing an effective letter.
Important Tips
- Properly address the letter to your legislator.
- Clearly state your position, the bill number and author of the bill.
- Use your own words to state your opinion and/or concerns.
- Be constructive and brief.
- End the letter with a request for follow up from your legislator.
