Custodians finding their voice on Joint Labor Management Committee with DGS
Updated 9:00 a.m., July 27
A joint labor management committee between SEIU Local 1000 custodians and top DGS officials began meeting this May to discuss important workplace issues.
“The committee is really a place where we can encourage management to work with us to resolve issues that will improve the work environment for custodians,” said Maria Patterson, a committee member and bargaining representative.
“The committee has focused on issues like the DGS cleaning program, labor management relations, and the lack of adequate training for both custodians and supervisors. On the issue of training, management made a strong commitment to improve both the scope and frequency of custodial trainings. They also acknowledged that they must do more to train managers on how they interact with staff. The next committee meeting is set for August 13th.
