January 2008 Council Meeting

Council adopts 2008 Strategic Plan and Budget

SEIU Local 1000 launched an ambitious campaign to expand the union’s reach, increase member participation and protect worker benefits during the state’s budget crisis.

In support of this expansion and the local’s campaign to win a new contract this summer, the 63-member council voted Saturday to adopt a $58.5 million budget that will put Local 1000 on track to meet these ambitious goals. That budget was adopted along with a document that outlines Local 1000 goals for 2008 as well as future years.

“We promised to deliver a vision and a program for the future, and we did just that by developing, funding and implementing our Plan for a 21st Century Union,” said President Jim Hard at the Council meeting in Los Angeles

The Council also looked at how well Local 1000 fulfilled 2007’s goals, adopted an outline for 2008 and adopted a plan to implement a statewide call center in Pasadena that will handle union grievances.

Council backs Local 1000 programs to protect job security,
expand representation and negotiate stronger contracts.

The 63 elected-member Local 1000 Council voted 62-1 for a three year budget supporting all programs in the union’s 21st Century Plan, including funding for the 2008 contract campaign and for the union’s strategic campaigns in major state departments.

“The vote underscores the union’s “common purpose,” said Local 1000 President Jim Hard. “The Council was nearly unanimous in our mission of building Local 1000 into the strongest union of California state employees, one that is dedicated to improving the standard of living for all workers and their families, and preserving state services.”
