Yesterday more than 300 members logged onto Local 1000's live blog from the Capitol Rally. Members who could not make it to the rally sent messages to their fellow co-workers cheering them on, giving them words of support, and speaking out about the current budget deficit.

Members were able to view up to the minute photos and posts from the rally as it was happening, these same members also took action by filling out online advocacy e-mail's to both the governor and the legislator.

SEIU and Local 1000’s campaign for a balanced solution to the state’s budget crisis, now has the support of the Democratic majority in the Legislature.  However, once again, the governor is threatening to veto any combination of revenues and cuts and is demanding only deep cuts to vital services and is holding out to cut our pay another five percent.

This week state Legislature is expected to vote on recommendations from the Joint Budget Conference Committee that includes a series of money saving proposals.

Republican legislators and the governor have made their opposition public, and are expected to vote against the committee recommendations. Their rejection of the cost-saving ideas will set the stage for a protracted legislative budget battle, and the likelihood of additional pay cuts remains.

For the second time, the Legislature's Joint Budget Conference Committee rejected the governor’s plan to cut state workers’ pay by another five percent, following fierce lobbying  from Local 1000.

But the fight is far from over. The conference committee’s vote is a nonbinding victory and Schwarzenegger is virtually certain to reintroduce his pay cut plan during  closed-door budget negotiations with the four leaders of the Legislature.
