Expansion of SEIU Local 1000 Professional Development and Scholarship Program
In response to suggestions from IT professionals, the popular Local
1000 scholarship program is being expanded to include IT classes at
CSU (California State University) and UC (University of California)
extension programs, as well as classes taken at California community
colleges.
Scholarships are awarded to members on a first-come
basis. One hundred scholarships have been allocated for each
semester. These scholarships are part of SEIU’s educational program to
help meet the training needs of the state’s IT workforce.
ITs who
take classes at community colleges will be reimbursed for fees of
$20.00 per unit, up to three classes per semester. ITs who take
classes through the CSU and UC extension programs will be reimbursed
$150.00 per semester.
In addition, the state has agreed to SEIU
Local 1000’s request to prioritize the creation of joint
labor-management committees on IT apprenticeship programs and IT
training needs. Under our current contract with the state, these
committees were scheduled to begin in autumn 2008. Given the pressing
training needs of the state’s IT workforce, bargaining will now start
in December 2007.
