Your right to paid leave to mentor a childArticle 8.17 Mentoring leave

Your union contract contains hundreds of provisions designed to protect your rights. Article 8.17 defines your right to paid time off to mentor a child or youth. Your Local 1000 contract guarantees:

Employees are eligible for up to 40 hours of mentoring leave per calendar year to participate in mentoring activities.

Employees must first use an equal amount of personal time (annual leave, vacation, personal leave, personal holiday or CTO) prior to requesting mentoring leave. Verification of personal time from the mentoring organization must be presented when requesting mentoring leave.

Mentoring leave has to be requested in the same calendar year as personal time was used.

Employees who are in permanent part-time or permanent intermittent status may receive a pro-rated amount of mentoring leave.

Mentoring leave requests are subject to operational needs.

For the purpose of this article, mentoring organizations must be listed in the California Mentor Program Directory issued by the governor’s office.

How to take Action
Contact your Local 1000 steward if you feel your rights have been violated. Your steward will work with you, management and your contract to determine the best course of action, including whether or not to file a grievance.
