Huber wins late in dramatic upset

Alyson Huber, a strong supporter of state workers, was sworn in to the state Assembly after a dramatic come-from-behind win in Assembly District 10. The support of Local 1000 members, who walked precincts and made phone calls on behalf of Huber, was crucial to the upset victory.

"Our members worked very hard for Alyson Huber and we can take some credit for her victory," said Local 1000 President Yvonne Walker, who personally led a team during the get out the vote effort on Election Day.  "We had members walking precincts in the pouring rain to identify Huber supporters. Later we went back to those neighborhoods and made sure those folks made it to the polls."

Change that Works

We have just made a difference, not only here in California but across the nation.  We worked hard on this election to elect representatives in California that are for working people, and to elect a President that holds our interests in his heart.

Now we need to work to make sure that this election means something even bigger, by ensuring that we move Congress and the president to repair our broken fiscal system, enact true health care reform and allow workers the freedom to form a union.

As part of SEIU, we are participating in the Change that Works program.  Participation in this program is about being part of something historic.  It will also involve deepening our skills as leaders, and continue to build one union for all members.

Obama makes history
California elects candidates who support state workers

Democrat Barack Obama’s historic election to be president of the United States received a huge boost from SEIU members across the nation, who together made more than 15 million phone calls and knocked on more than 5 million doors nationwide.  SEIU helped coordinate one of the national's largest mobilization efforts in his behalf because Obama has vowed to support policies to help America's working families.

Here is how California voted in the presidential race:

Barack Obama  61.3%
John McCain
  37%

We can make a difference

Every day, California legislators make decisions that affect our jobs, our families and our lives.

Local 1000 is building a member-based political program that holds legislators accountable and creates power for working people. Our focus is on issues of social and economic justice that have a lasting impact on California’s public workforce.

How does Local 1000 build political power?

  • We endorse candidates that have shown a commitment to standing up for public workers.

  • We raise resources and mobilize members to help elect our endorsed candidates and send a message to politicians that their success or failure depends on SEIU.

  • We visit legislators to inform them about issues important to the members of Local 1000. We encourage them keep standing up for the interests of state workers and Californians.
