SEIU TV ad: ‘common sense budget’
New budget campaign to balance cuts & revenues
Updated 2:45 p.m., June 10
Local 1000 and the SEIU State Council released a new TV advertisement today that takes aim at the massive cuts to state programs proposed by Gov. Schwarzenegger.
The advertisement is just one piece of an effort by Local 1000 and the SEIU State Council to move the Capitol debate away from balancing the budget through deep cuts alone. We are urging legislators and the governor to balance program cuts with revenue enhancements and efficiencies such as reducing outsourcing.
Our position is bolstered by a recent statewide poll of registered voters that shows that 65 percent, including a majority of those who voted against Proposition 1A in May, support solving the budget deficit with a mixture of cuts and new taxes. Meanwhile, only 29 percent supported closing the deficit through cuts alone.
But the budget would keep huge tax breaks for big oil companies and include no tax hikes on tobacco or liquor.
