What is political power and how does our union shape its program around building political power? Power comes from money, member mobilization and credibility.
- We aim to endorse candidates that fill out our questionnaire and have shown that they will stand up for public workers.
- We raise money and mobilize members to elect these candidates and send a message to politicians that their success or failure depends on SEIU.
- We visit legislators in their district and in the capitol with a well-defined program and expect them to continue to support a program that benefits state workers and the people who benefit from the services we provide.
- Our policy positions are reinforced by a team of researchers and policy analysts who provide credible information useful to politicians and supportive of state services.
- We train workers to tell their stories and educate politicians who are our bosses and who stand up to fight for quality public services.
A union for all political partiesWe are one of the first unions in the country to develop a program that recruits Republican members to meet with their Republican legislators. Our program builds on the diversity of California to recruit people of all parties to hold legislators accountable to our program-to send a message that state service is non-partisan. The services we provide to all Californians are services that all legislators should fight for, and investing in a quality workforce that is trained and justly compensated is good for all Californians.
