OCE Releases New Academic Calendar
CDCR teachers win more flexibility in 2015-16 academic calendar

Post

CDCR’s Office of Correctional Education just came out with its new academic calendar for 2015/2016. Prison teachers in Bargaining Unit 3 are gaining new scheduling flexibility in the 2015-16 academic year as a result of Local 1000’s persistent advocacy efforts. The new calendar retains 208 instructional days, eight staff development days and four quarterly teacher workdays, but the prison schools will stay open a few more days per year, allowing individual teachers to choose some of the instructional days.

“For the first time ever, we have persuaded management at the Office of Correctional Education (OCE) to introduce some flexibility into the academic calendars that our teachers in the prison adult schools use,” said John Kern, chair of Bargaining Unit 3.  “For years our teachers have fought to control their time off and the bargaining team made arguments that the new management team at OCE found persuasive. Teachers will be able to devote their full energies to the important work of rehabilitation through education, while also having the ability to meet their personal responsibilities and to make plans with their families.”

The OCE academic calendar negotiating team consisted of Bruce Theel, Elma Rodriguez, Kim Warton and John Kern.
