A Message from our President, Yvonne R. Walker
Board of Directors unanimously approves statewide vote on concerted actions, including strike

Dear Local 1000 members,

I’m writing to you with a very important message about contract negotiations.

During our July 30 executive session, our SEIU Local 1000 Board of Directors voted unanimously to authorize a statewide membership vote on any and all concerted actions, up to and including a strike, in support of bargaining our contract.

In short, we are exploring every option available to win a contract we can all be proud of.

This pivotal decision comes right after our state-wide town hall tour, in which our bargaining team heard from you loud and clear that the state’s contract proposal falls short of our members’ priorities.

The state can do better, you told us.

We initially began the town halls after negotiations with the state reached a crossroads. We knew we had to hear from you directly about how you felt about the state’s offer. Thousands of you participated in the meetings that covered 13 cities in two weeks and included a live stream portion and an online survey.

Up and down the state – from San Diego to Eureka – your voice and message was clear: In a time when California is the sixth-largest economy in the world, it’s time we value the working families who make California a great place to live. We, the state workers, keep our community healthy, safe and strong. We are California.

At town halls and through surveys, you expressed you are ready to step up and fight for a great contract.

Now that we heard from you at town hall meetings and our Board of Directors equipped us with more available options, our bargaining team will set up new bargaining dates with the state.

Stay tuned for further actions and updates as we create a path forward together.

We started this journey together and we will finish this journey together.

This is our union. This is our contract. This is our future. And together we are unstoppable.

In Solidarity,

Yvonne R. Walker
