SUPER BOWL LVII: NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIST “LA MORENA” CHOSEN AS NFL’S MARQUEE ARTIST

Announcement

Native American artist Lucinda ‘La Morena’ Hinojos was selected by the National Football League as the marquee artist for Superbowl LVII.  Her design, based on Ohn Akimel O’odham Jeved land in Phoenix, was unveiled in early January and features the White Tank Mountains reflected in the traditional Vince Lombardi trophy, surrounded by the fancy shawl and Azteca dancers, basket, hummingbirds, and cactus.  The dancers reflect the 22 tribes in her area, the basket represent the land, and the hummingbirds signify messengers. Her message through this painting and all her murals is to “provide healing and medicine” and “bring people together” as they talk about what her painting means to them.

NFL partner Wilson is also collaborating with La Morena on a football design. The ball is inspired by the progression of her own personal artistic journey and how important heritage and community are to her.

The artwork created by Hinojos will be showcased around the state, culminating in being displayed on the Super Bowl game-day tickets The Super Bowl LVII will take place on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at State Farm Stadium in Arizona.
