Supporting CalTrans Toll Collectors and Custodians Facing Layoffs

SEIU Local 1000 is working to mitigate the effects of a pending layoff of more than 150 bridge toll collectors and custodians working at CalTrans District 4 in the Bay Area.

Our union contract—in Article 16—has language that governs the layoff and reemployment process and we’re taking steps to ensure that our members have every opportunity to continue their state employment.

Susan Rodriguez – Building Member Strength at State Fund

Susan Rodriguez, SEIU Local 1000 member and Unit 1 Chair, first became an activist during contract negotiations. Her office was planning on an informational picket, and she stepped up to help organize and spread the word in her workplace at the San Jose District Office for State Fund. Two years later, Susan became a steward and followed that up almost immediately by getting involved as a CBUR. “I did it because I wanted to make sure that our office had that connection with the larger organization of SEIU Local 1000,” she said.

Strategic Leadership Works to End PLP Early

The Personal Leave Program (PLP) negotiated with the State last summer may come to an end one year early, on July 1 of this year. If that happens, our members will see the 9.23% pay cut they endured fully restored ahead of schedule.

Our side letter with the State says, in part, “If the Governor and Legislature do not draw funds from the rainy-day fund to cover revenue shortfalls, the PLP 2020 in fiscal year 2021-22 will be discontinued.”
