Local 1000 Activism Leads to Salary Increase
Following a groundbreaking, collaborative effort with the State to identify $200 million in cost savings for the upcoming year, our 2% general salary increase that would have been deferred to 2022 will instead be reinstated and paid in July 2021.
Facing a pandemic-fueled $54 billion deficit one year ago, Governor Newsom called for a 9.23% pay cut for all state workers. Our bargaining team reached an agreement that reduced the pay cut, including postponing OPEB contributions and increasing health care payments, and mitigated it with a Personal Leave Program (PLP).
Celebrating Arab American Heritage Month
April is National Arab American Heritage month, celebrating a rich heritage, culture and the contributions of Arab Americans and Arabic-speaking Americans.
Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, from Algeria to Yemen, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. There are approximately 3.7 million Arab Americans in the U.S., and more than 300,000 reside in California.

Members across the state are voting to elect Local 1000’s union leadership. They’re filling out ballots and choosing the leaders of their District Labor Councils, their bargaining representatives, and their statewide officers.

Jerome Washington Helps Lead the Fight for Environmental Justice for All
Earth Day, which occurs on April 22, is a reminder of the important role we all have to play as stewards of our environmental health. As summer approaches and high heat sets in, SEIU Local 1000 remains committed to our mission to help our members—and ALL Californians—enjoy the fruits of social, economic, and environmental justice. To make our mission statement’s commitment to the environment more than words, members like Jerome Washington have been leading the way through the SEIU Local 1000 Environmental Committee.
