For workers looking to build a career in the public sector, the challenge of developing their skills can be daunting. Meeting the qualifications that ensure state workers are prepared to serve the people of California is sometimes a difficult task, but SEIU Local 1000’s Apprenticeship Programs help make this process more accessible.

Apprenticeships couple on-the-job training with related study or instruction in order to increase workers’ skills and allow them to be more competitive in the job market.  Within state service, apprenticeship programs equate to broader career options, upward mobility, and ultimately, higher wages.

Are you looking to embark on a career in financial services? Local 1000 is now recruiting for the third cohort of the Financial Services Apprenticeship program with classes and training planned to begin as soon as January 2023. This opportunity is being offered to all represented employees working for the following departments:

  • California Department of Tax and Fee Administration;
  • California State Lottery;
  • California Public Employees Retirement System;
  • California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation;
  • California Department of Tax and Fee Administration;
  • Department of Industrial Relations;
  • Department of State Hospitals;
  • Employment Development Department.

Those accepted in the program will be registered as apprentices and enter a Training and Development assignment in a financial services position in the geographic area designated by their department for a period of up to two years. Through the course of the program, apprentices will receive on-the-job training and related instruction in coursework focused on accounting, auditing, and financial analysis from American River College.  Upon concluding the program, apprentices will meet the minimum qualifications to promote into an Accountant Trainee or Tax Auditor classification.
