Hundreds of Statewide Leaders Convene to Launch Membership Campaign

Our contract expires in less than a year—337 days as of this writing—and SEIU Local 1000 just kicked off a comprehensive campaign to boost membership and increase engagement to empower us to win a great contract in 2023.

In Sacramento and in our four regional offices across the state, Local 1000 Job Stewards convened on July 28 to hear the importance and impact of stronger membership numbers on our upcoming negotiations.

“With only 53% membership, the State can treat us any way they want,” said Board Chair Bill Hall, who helped his fellow leaders launch a campaign targeting 64% membership by March, 2023, when formal negotiations are likely to begin.

Hall was joined by Local 1000 Vice Presidents David Jimenez, Anica Walls, and Irene Green, all of whom will be leading the effort to build a stronger union. In Sacramento, as well as in our field offices, our Stewards also heard from two leaders from SEIU International: President Mary Kay Henry and Heather Conroy, Vice President of the Public Sector division.

“Across the state, we are re-energizing this union to do the work needed to strengthen Local 1000,” added Board Chair Hall. “And generating the leverage we need to begin negotiations in a stronger position begins with generating more members.”
