Our Groundbreaking Apprenticeship Program has New Offerings in 2023!

Article published on March 24, 2023

At SEIU Local 1000, upward mobility is a Union value. Since 2016, we’ve been providing a growing number of opportunities for our members in the form of ground-breaking apprentice programs in the areas of nursing, financial services, and information technology.

We’re expanding those opportunities with a new program for Bargaining Unit 15, additional opportunities for Licensed Vocational Nurses aspiring to become Registered Nurses, and new pathways in Civil Service apprenticeships. Read more:

DGS-SEIU Local 1000 Custodial to Office Administration Apprenticeship

The DGS-SEIU Local 1000 Custodial to Office Administration Apprenticeship Program is designed to provide a path of upward mobility for our Unit 15 Custodians into roles such as Office Technician, Personnel Specialist, and Staff Services Analyst.

In early March 2023, program partners Local 1000, DGS, and Bakersfield College received a California Apprenticeship Initiative grant award to support its development and administration over the next few years.

Uplifting our Custodians with this apprenticeship program has been an objective of ours for the last few years, and we are excited to announce that we intend to begin recruitment in the coming months. The apprenticeship is being designed to extend opportunities at a variety of worksites statewide to DGS Custodians.

“Our DGS Custodians, who work in Unit 15, are some of the most important employees in state service,” says Eric Murray, Unit 15 Chair. They are often overlooked, underappreciated, and unseen for the work they do for all Californians. I am super excited for this partnership with the Union and DGS offering this avenue of a promotable pattern for our DGS Custodians.”

Please look out for additional details about this program to eventually be shared by email and website postings in the coming months.

LVN to RN Preapprenticeship

SEIU Local 1000’s research efforts secured additional grant funding for a new type of program: an LVN to RN Preapprenticeship with CCHCS!  This program has been in development for a year and will be offered through Sacramento City College, San Joaquin Delta College, and Riverside City College.   It is intended to assist LVNs – who are interested in the LVN to RN Apprenticeship program – complete science courses and other prerequisites through tuition assistance. Coursework has been selected for the preapprenticeship based on the historical challenges pre-nursing students experience in completing this coursework with high success and with an aim to best ready students to enter the targeted LVN to RN Apprenticeship.  Information sessions are scheduled the last week of March, and more information can be found on our website!

Civil Service Apprenticeships

In January 2023, we recruited our third cohort of Financial Services apprentices comprised of 14 apprentices from a variety of departments and geographic locations throughout the state. Additionally, our zSystems Apprenticeship Program registered its third cohort of apprentices and our Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program registered its second cohort of apprentices in mid-March 2023.

Looking forward, we are planning on launching with a Civil Service Preapprenticeship aimed at uplifting our members in their desired career paths, as well as prepare them for the apprenticeships for which they might eventually be eligible.

We are excited about the continuation and expansion of our given programs, as well as other opportunities that might lie ahead.
