Little Hoover Commission Adopts Report on Mandatory Overtime
Local 1000 Nurses Testified Urging the Commission to take Action
On March 30th the Little Hoover Commission unanimously voted to adopt a report on the use of mandatory overtime at state facilities. Local 1000 nurse leaders testified as to the dangerous staffing practice and urged the Commissioners to adopt the report.
“Eliminating mandatory overtime is vital to improving working conditions for nurses across the state,” said Mary Naidoo, Registered Nurse at California Medical Facility. “The Commission’s report sheds light on the abuse of mandatory overtime.”
Recruitment and Retention Mutual Report
On March 25, 2016 committee members from ten (10) Local 1000 impacted classifications, members of the Unit 1 Bargaining Team and representatives from CalHR and multiple departments met to finalize their report on recommended solutions to the recruitment and retention problems those classifications currently face. These recommendations will be presented to Richard Gillihan, Director of CalHR, and ultimately to the State Administration.
Recruitment and Retention Update
Over the last few months the Unit 1 Bargaining team members and members in over 34 classifications prepared expert testimony to present to the California Human Resources (CalHR) department. Listed below are the members who are doing excellent work in representing your classification group during this process. The last classification group presented their testimony and proposal to CalHR on February 4th.

The goal is to create opportunities for our members to become active in Local 1000 through our focus on the Latin@ community. We are looking for activities that are not focused solely on sponsorship, but rather on engaging our members to serve active roles.

Each year, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, but for our Local 1000 Latin@ Committee, recognizing our rich Latino heritage is part of their mission statement as they work to build a bridge between the past and the future of our brothers and sisters.
“The historic achievements of Latino leaders past and present is a template for the work of our committee and reminds us that we have more work to do,” said Miguel Cordova, committee chair.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
The physical and emotional scars of domestic violence can cast a long shadow. Too many individuals face the pain and fear of domestic violence, victims who often suffer in silence and without support.
The Local 1000 Women’s Committee stands with those who have endured the often-tragic consequences of domestic violence and works to help prevent future incidents.
It is in this spirit that Local 1000 recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month with its efforts to educate and provide solutions to victims.

Bargaining Unit 20 LVNs working at Ironwood State Prison have been assured of safer and healthier working conditions during prison construction after filing a grievance and ultimately winning a settlement during arbitration.
