Bargaining Team Proposes a More Realistic and Respectful Essential Worker Pay Package

Our Local 1000 Bargaining Team—led by Irene Green, VP of Bargaining— returned to the table with the state on Sept. 1 to present an Essential Worker Pay (EWP) proposal that more appropriately rewards our represented employees for their efforts to provide vital services in truly dangerous public-facing working conditions that continue as this pandemic persists.

Our new proposal is for a one-time payment of $6,000 for all eligible employees represented by Local 1000 regardless of whether they were teleworking or in person.

LVN to RN Apprenticeship

SEIU Local 1000’s Research Department successfully secured a third grant that extended the LVN-to-RN apprenticeship program to Riverside City College (RCC), therein making our LVN-to-RN apprenticeship programs statewide offerings. This program is similar to the San Joaquin Delta College program and Sacramento City College apprenticeships, but is also intended to offer education through distance learning. Presently, the LVN-to-RN apprenticeships are limited to LVNs working at CCHCS, but we hope to expand in the future.

Information Technology Apprenticeship Programs

SEIU Local 1000 continues to expand the scope of apprenticeship opportunities it works to provide to our members. In 2017, the nation’s first public sector IT apprenticeship program with a networking focus was launched.  The program has since broadened to also include a focus of help desk/client services. Nearly 50 IT apprentices have been registered so far, and they receive on-the-job training as well as college level instruction. Half of our apprentices have already received promotions into their sought-after IT classifications.
