New Year’s Leadership News from Board Chair Bill Hall
Despite the recent news predicting a $29 billion state budget deficit, we must focus on our strategic goals in 2023. We’ve set an ambitious plan to grow membership and deliver meaningful change in bargaining and for our Union. To do so, we’ll start 2023 by listening to our represented workers in town halls across the state. We will continue to ask the difficult questions: How do we connect effectively in a teleworking landscape? What do our workers want to invest in our Contract Campaign?
Protecting our hard-earned rights is a Local 1000 Priority
Having a strong union means having the power to protect our rights and enforce our contract, and our online search tool allows our members easy-to-use access to the hundreds of contract articles that govern our wages, benefits, and working conditions.
Are you looking for information about vacation accrual? Rules regarding sick leave? How to take advantage of upward mobility programs in your department? The answers are just a click away at contract.seiu1000.org

Share your story and tell the State we need a fair and equitable contract
Our Contract—the document that governs our wages, working conditions, and benefits—expires on June 30, just a little more than six months away. Already, our bargaining teams are focused on the upcoming negotiations and building a stronger membership.
One of our most powerful bargaining tools are member stories, personal accounts of how a good contract will impact your life and your family.
We are not line items on a spreadsheet! Stand up and tell the State your story
CalPERS: Using the power of our pension dollars for a sustainable future
One of the key benefits of state employment is our defined-benefit pension, which is managed by the California Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS). It’s the nation’s largest public pension fund and manages both our health and retirement benefits.
CalPERS uses the power of its assets responsibly to effect positive change across many sectors of society, including climate change and environmental sustainability. In one example, they’ve joined with some 700 investors—representing $68 trillion in assets—to improve climate change governance and reduce emissions.
We’re building a stronger union for a better contract.

Representational Win: Safety Improvements for Dental Assistants at Pelican Bay
Ensuring the workplace safety of our represented employees is an SEIU Local 1000 priority. Recently, the hard-earned rights of Bargaining Unit 20 Dental Assistants working at Pelican Bay State Prison were reaffirmed by our Union after winning arbitration.
