Information Technology Apprenticeship Programs
SEIU Local 1000 continues to expand the scope of apprenticeship opportunities it works to provide to our members. In 2017, the nation’s first public sector IT apprenticeship program with a networking focus was launched. The program has since broadened to also include a focus of help desk/client services. Nearly 50 IT apprentices have been registered so far, and they receive on-the-job training as well as college level instruction. Half of our apprentices have already received promotions into their sought-after IT classifications. Recently, SEIU Local 1000 has been working with Government Operations Agency, the California Department of Technology, Division of Apprenticeship Standards, IBM, American River College, and the City College of San Francisco to establish additional programs aimed at mainframe computing and cybersecurity occupations. We anticipate opening the next application period of IT apprenticeships in winter 2020.
