A Holiday Message from Local 1000 President Yvonne R. Walker

I love this time of year.

It’s a time of crackling fires, twinkling lights and holding family and friends close as we reflect on the blessings of the past year and the possibilities of the year to come.

As I reflect on our union family, I celebrate all that we have accomplished together and all the opportunities that lie before us in the coming year. Brothers and sisters, when we reach out and connect to each other and practice the four habits of leadership, our possibilities are limited only by our imaginations and by our willingness to step forward and stand up for our convictions. As we prepare to bargain a new contract, I know that the strength and leadership we have built throughout Local 1000 will translate into unbelievable clout at the bargaining table.

But as we celebrate what we can accomplish as a union, we must also acknowledge the jittery and uncertain times we live in. The recent horrific violence in San Bernardino and Paris has unleashed an ugly atmosphere of fear and prejudice. During this season of peace, we must reach deeper into ourselves, calling on our better natures to drive away the hatred. As the children’s song says:

“Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.”

I wish you a joyous and safe holiday season with the ones you love. I wish you peace. And I look forward to working with you to make 2016 the best year Local 1000 has ever had.

In Solidarity,

Yvonne R. Walker
