Asian-Pacific Islander Committee

Vision Statement:

The Local 1000 Asian-Pacific Islander Committee will work to empower APIs in the labor movement by ensuring that API workers are recognized, valued, and respected. We will apply that power to share the social, economic, and political issues facing us by developing API members to lead in our Union, in our worksites and in our communities. We do so to leave a stronger, more inclusive union for future generations.

Asian-Pacific Islander Committee Statement regarding the recent mass shootings

The Lunar New Year is a time for family, gatherings, and celebrations. We are deeply saddened by the news of two mass shootings in the United States that have ended the lives of fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters. Our hearts go out to the Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay communities, to the families directly impacted by these tragic events, and to all those affected by gun violence. Everyone deserves to feel safe and live in peace. This is why we reiterate our support for reasonable gun control and background checks. We demand that lawmakers work together, just like they did during the first mass killings in the Asian community at the Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton when lawmakers came together to ban assault rifles. We demand lawmakers do this again and make it permanent. Enough is enough. We must have the courage to act.

SEIU Local 1000 Asian-Pacific Islander Committee Responds to President Biden’s Executive Actions

On January 26, 2021, President Biden signed four executive actions, one of which specifically addresses housing, justice reforms, and actions to combat xenophobia against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. We applaud these efforts, but we also realize this is just the beginning of our hard work to recovery. It is up to us to come together for what is right, and it is also up to us to hold our elected officials accountable in lifting up all working families, regardless of race, class, gender, or religion. We are in a moment where we can change history and not let it repeat itself, but it starts with me and you…US!
