SEIU Members Make Key Endorsements:
Re-elect Tony Thurmond as Schools Superintendent, Keep Rob Bonta as Attorney General

Press release

Sacramento, CA (June 24, 2021) — The 700,000 member Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California today announced two endorsements in the 2022 primary election for statewide offices. Members of SEIU local unions in California come together with one voice to make endorsements for state offices; SEIU members have come together to decide they will work to re-elect Tony Thurmond as Superintendent of Public Instruction and to elect Attorney General Rob Bonta to another, full term.

“Every pathway to a society of greater equity and inclusion runs through schools, and Superintendent Tony Thurmond understands that SEIU members are essential to delivering the support students need to succeed from the earliest brain-building years through college. He is as determined as we are to remove obstacles students face because of poverty and racism,” said Max Arias, Executive Director of SEIU Local 99. “SEIU members will be working hard to re-elect Tony Thurmond as schools chief because he will stand with us to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed, whether she is Black, Brown, API, Native American or white.”

April Verrett, President of SEIU Local 2015, added: “California’s attorney general holds a pivotal role in advancing California toward justice and upholding our state’s values of equity, fairness, and inclusion. SEIU members in California proudly endorse Rob Bonta to continue in this important post, enforcing the laws that protect workers and their families, holding corporations accountable, and moving forward meaningful changes in our justice system so that we can finally be a society that lives up to the promise of equal treatment for all under the law.”
