On May 21, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an Executive Order aimed at protecting workers from being displaced by AI in the workplace. This Executive Order requires agencies to prepare support like improved severance packages for workers in the event that they are laid off due to AI implementation. SEIU Local 1000 President Anica Walls offered the following insight on the Executive Order:

We’re glad to see Governor Newsom is finally acknowledging the serious impact AI could have on workers and public services, but workers cannot simply be treated as an afterthought while employers and corporations race toward automation.

State workers are already raising concerns about AI tools that create more work, produce inaccuracies and still require significant human oversight. California’s public services depend on the experience, judgment and accountability that skilled public employees provide every day.

If the State is serious about protecting workers, state workers need a real seat at the table as these technologies are introduced into our workplaces and public services.
