BECOME A JOB STEWARD

Launch Pad

Launch Pad program previously known as LAPS FastTrack.

We continue to accept applications for Launch Pad, the SEIU Local 1000 Job Steward Training Program, which has new classes starting throughout the year, and we invite you to apply to become a Job Steward.

Why become a SEIU Local 1000 Job Steward?

It is important that SEIU Local 1000 have a strong steward presence at all worksites. Stewards serve as the essential link between the union and its members at the workplace level.

    1. Representation: Stewards ensure that members have someone to represent them in grievances, disciplinary actions, and protecting their rights under the contract.
    2. Contract Enforcement: Stewards help enforce the union contract by identifying and address violations, ensuring management is held accountable.
    3. Communication: Steward act as a two-way communication channel, relaying updates to members and bringing workplace issues back to Local 1000 leadership.
    4. Support and Education to Coworkers: Steward help coworkers understand their rights and the benefits of union membership, empowering them to stand up for themselves.
    5. Union Strength: The presence of strong, active stewards builds solidarity and strengthens the union’s ability to organize, bargain, and take collective action.

The following steps are required for admission to the program:

  1. Complete the Job Steward online application:Click here

Pay careful attention to the questions that ask for your unique perspective, especially regarding the Purpose Statement. SEIU Local 1000 leaders are known for their diverse talents and interests. Use this application to describe who you are, your values and strengths, and what you will bring to the Local. Please give thought to the values expressed in the Purpose Statement and share how they relate to your own values, goals, and passions. The Purpose Statement can be found on our website.

  1. After you complete the online application, you will be sent an email with instructions on how to fulfill these other two required steps.

Obtain TWO (2) letters of recommendation.

Written by your coworkers in the office/unit/floor/etc. that you would represent if you became a Job Steward. The letters should outline why these individuals believe you would be successful as a Job Steward. Outside recommendations from family members, supervisors, and state workers not represented by SEIU Local 1000 are not acceptable. Template letters are also not acceptable.

We highly encourage you to use the online application submission process, but if you do not have the ability to utilize the online application submission process, you can email the application, two letters of recommendation, and the 25-signature petition. Please contact [email protected] to request to email the application package.
