Information Technology (IT) Apprenticeship

Overview

Information Technology (IT)
Apprenticeship Program

Another first—this time the first public sector IT apprenticeship program with a networking focus, also launched in 2017. Since then, Local 1000 has worked to further develop IT apprenticeship opportunities for our members. We added a help desk/client services focus to expand our initial apprenticeship. Then in 2019, we launched the zSystems Apprenticeship program focused on training apprentices in mainframe computing technology. More recently, we established the Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program and look forward to registering the first cohort of apprentices in the near future.

SEIU Local 1000 continues to expand the scope of apprenticeship opportunities it works to provide to our members. In 2017, the nation’s first public sector IT apprenticeship program with a networking focus was launched.  The program has since broadened to also include a focus of help desk/client services. Nearly 50 IT apprentices have been registered so far, and they receive on-the-job training as well as college level instruction. Many of our apprentices have already received promotions into their sought-after IT classifications. In 2019, SEIU Local 1000 partnered with Government Operations Agency, the California Department of Technology, Division of Apprenticeship Standards, IBM, and American River College to establish an apprenticeship aimed at mainframe computing. The most recent addition to SEIU Local 1000’s portfolio of apprenticeships is the Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program, which has been developed as another partnership with American River College, along with the Division of Apprenticeship Standards, Franchise Tax Board, and Labor & Workforce Development Agency.
