The SEIU Local 1000 Women’s Empowerment Committee (WEC) has put two statewide events on its activity calendar, and you’re invited to join both.
On September 9, the popular LUNAFEST film festival returns. In January 2023, an all-new event — a day-long women’s conference — will debut. A third event, a discussion about the unseen effects of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, is soon to be scheduled.

“Our committee is back at full strength and fulfilling our mission of educating Local 1000 members about the issues that affect women, at work and at home,” said Tracie Kimbrough, WEC Chair.

LUNAFEST – September 9
Launched in 2000 as the very first traveling film festival featuring films by and about women, LUNAFEST has spotlighted the work of 170 filmmakers in 2,700 live and virtual screenings, bringing fresh perspectives and connecting communities.
“It’s a Friday night, and we’re encouraging families (especially daughters) to come together to watch compelling movies and to meet and talk with the film’s creators,” said Kimbrough.
Be sure to save the date, watch the WEC web page, and check your email for early registration opportunities…and a special offer.
WOW! Conference – January 2023
With a focus on the spiritual, mental, and physical well-being of our represented employees, the WEC is planning a day-long, virtual conference offering the tools necessary to help us thrive.
“This is a proud collaboration with Local 1000’s African American Committee (AAC),” said Tracie. “We’re working closely with AAC Chair Tonya Bealey, and together we plan to impart a sense of ‘awesome’ to every attendee.”
