When custodians at Napa State Hospital were asked to clean up long-abandoned medical equipment stored in a basement known to be infested with mice, rats, and roaches, Eric Bowers didn’t hesitate to act. The conditions were not only unsanitary—they were unacceptable.
Upon learning about the situation, Eric immediately raised the alarm. He contacted the department responsible and made it clear that this task was not safe or appropriate for custodial staff. He also reached out to the Union Resource Center and began coordinating with other custodians to ensure their voices were heard and their concerns addressed.
Eric’s swift and decisive action is a powerful example of what union leadership looks like in practice. He didn’t wait for someone else to step in—he took responsibility and stood up for the most vulnerable workers, those who often go unseen but are essential to the care and support of our fellow Californians.
To the custodians who work alongside him, Eric Bowers is more than a colleague—he’s a hero. His commitment to safety, wellness, and dignity in the workplace reflects the best of what our union stands for. We’re proud of you, Eric. Keep up the hard work and the hard fight.
