As we move through the winter months, temperatures fluctuate and holiday gatherings increase our exposure to seasonal illnesses. It’s common to catch a cold, the flu, or other sickness during this time. Remember, you have the right to use sick leave when you are ill or caring for a sick family member.

Sick leave can also be used for medical appointments, including dental, vision, and other physical or medical examinations. Employees cannot be denied the right to use sick leave, face corrective or disciplinary action, or be discriminated against for exercising this right based solely on the amount of sick leave used.

A doctor’s note may be required only if there is a clear pattern of sick leave abuse or if your supervisor has a valid reason to believe the absence was unauthorized. “Valid reason” means a practical person would also believe the absence was for an unauthorized purpose. If you have been disciplined for using sick leave, contact the Member Resource Center (MRC) for assistance.
