“My name is Karen Maddox-Long and I’m a Custodian with the Department of General Services. I have 17 years of State service with 3 of those being a job steward and a Bargaining Unit Negotiating Committee (BUNC) member.  I always remember hearing my co-workers complain about how badly the State treats its workers. I would also hear my coworkers say how hard we work as Custodians, and no one notices. I used to work with a lady named Nacole, who became a supervisor. But before she left her rank-and-file position. She said Karen, “You will make a good Steward for the union”. You’re always giving out information to help your coworkers. So, I did what was necessary and signed up for Laps to become a steward. I got involved. Now I’m getting ready to negotiate the contract with the State of California on behalf of Unit 15. It’s an honor and a privilege to be a part of this historical event.”

“I became a SEIU100 union steward years ago because I wanted to be the voice of the people that are silent and really make a difference to help others bring to light important worksite issues that allow us to be able to work in a positive and more productive work environment.”
