African-American Committee
Our Mission
The mission of the SEIU Local 1000 African American Committee is to empower, advocate for, and strengthen African American members by promoting leadership, unity, education, civic engagement, cultural awareness, and community service. We are committed to uplifting our members, strengthening our communities, advancing equity and representation, and developing the next generation of leaders within our union and beyond.
Through advocacy, education, community partnerships, cultural recognition, and meaningful service, the African American Committee honors and celebrates the history, achievements, resilience, and contributions of African Americans throughout the year. Our committee recognizes and supports significant cultural and historical observances, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the MLK Day of Service, Black History Month, Juneteenth National Independence Day, and Kwanzaa, while also honoring important milestones and individuals throughout African American history. Our signature initiatives include the Leora Hill Scholarship Fund, Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, Annual Holiday Toy Giveaway, and other educational, cultural, service, and community programs held throughout California.
Rooted in service, empowerment, education, representation, cultural pride, and collective action, we honor the legacy of those who came before us while creating opportunities for those who will come after us. We strive to ensure that African American voices are heard, our history is remembered, our culture is celebrated, our members are represented, and our communities continue to move forward together.
Our Human Rights Committees provide a space to advocate for equality, fairness, and social justice. By joining, you can help drive meaningful change and ensure every worker’s voice is heard. Let us know which committees you’d like to hear from about upcoming events, announcements and other opportunities to engage with our teams by filling out our survey.
