Board Ratifies Political Support for Candidates

Our Board of Directors met in special session October 6 and voted to support the recommendations of our Committee on Political Education (COPE) to support a slate of candidates in the upcoming November election.

We supported eleven candidates in “local” races throughout the state—school board trustee, supervisor, mayor, and the like—and from our Political Action Committee funds, disbursed nearly $140,000 in support after the Board voted 38-5 to approve.

Important Thoughts on Tomorrow’s Hispanic Heritage

As we observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of our Latinx members and labor leaders throughout history … it’s important to think about tomorrow’s heritage and how it’s shaped.

The fight for social and economic justice often manifests itself at the ballot box. Candidates and initiatives that affect many aspects of our lives are decided by vote, but the the powerful and growing Hispanic population lags behind other demographic groups in voter registration and mobilization.

We Made Politics Matter – Supplementary Paid Sick Leave Extended

California’s Supplementary Paid Sick Leave—providing up to 80 hours of COVID-19 relief to families—has been extended through the end of 2022, past its original planned date of September 31. The victory for working families comes after a concerted effort by SEIU Local 1000 and our statewide labor allies who partnered to press for the extension.

We lobbied lawmakers in California’s Assembly and Senate, the Governor’s Office, and the Department of Finance to extend this important lifeline.

Local 1000 Celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month

In October, Americans observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month by paying tribute to the accomplishments of the men and women with disabilities whose work helps keep the nation’s economy strong and by reaffirming their commitment to ensure equal opportunity for all citizens.

Local 1000’s Accessibility Committee—one of 10 Human Rights Committees in our Union—spends all 12 months of the year working to ensure that accessibility for disabled workers is a vital part of the equity equation.
