We’re proud to announce a significant win for the health and safety of our custodial staff and all state employees: the inclusion of Section 10.39 – Sharps Disposal in our latest Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Under this new provision, all buildings with state employees are now required to provide sharps containers in restrooms, in accordance with SAM section 1930.12. This change is more than just a policy update—it’s a meaningful step toward protecting the people who keep our facilities clean and operational every day.
For too long, custodians have faced the risk of accidental needle sticks while handling restroom trash. These incidents are not only traumatic but can also pose serious health risks. With the implementation of designated sharps containers, we’re taking proactive measures to eliminate this hazard and create a safer, more respectful work environment.
This new section is also grievable up to Step 3 (CalHR), ensuring that compliance is taken seriously and that workers have a clear path to address any concerns.
This achievement reflects the power of collective bargaining and the importance of listening to the voices of those on the front lines. It’s a reminder that every improvement—no matter how small it may seem—can have a profound impact on someone’s daily life.Let’s continue to advocate for practical, compassionate solutions that protect and uplift our workforce.
