“Say no to RTO!” and “We want telework!” are common chants at recent actions organized by SEIU Local 1000, as the bargaining team presents telework language to the State. Members across units have shown strong solidarity around telework and its benefits.
At the same time, Bargaining Unit 15 includes classifications that cannot telework, including custodians. This group could be directly affected by expanded telework and building closures.
Custodians play a critical role in keeping state facilities running. They work behind the scenes to maintain clean conference rooms, stocked restrooms, and a professional environment for both employees and the public.
The BU 15 Bargaining Team recognized the need to protect these positions while telework proposals move forward. We proposed language focused on job security, preserving positions impacted by reduced building use, and expanding training opportunities so affected employees can continue working for the State. We also pushed for immediate transfer opportunities through the Post and Bid system if staffing changes occur.
The State responded that current provisions already address these concerns and that existing CalHR rules would apply.
