In June 2025, Nicole Crist and Jared Reece represented SEIU Local 1000’s Lavender Committee at the Human Rights Campaign Equality Conference in Washington, D.C., a premier national gathering for LGBTQ+ policy, advocacy, and leadership development. Their attendance, made possible through Local 1000’s commitment to intersectional equity and member representation, ensured that the voices and concerns of LGBTQ+ state workers were present in one of the nation’s most influential LGBTQ+ convenings.

The Equality Conference featured in-depth discussions on anti-trans legislation, reproductive freedom, racial justice, inclusive healthcare, and workplace protections, all issues that directly impact Local 1000 members across California. By participating in these sessions, Nicole and Jared gained up-to-date knowledge on the political threats and legal trends facing queer and trans people today, allowing them to bring back timely, actionable insights to our union spaces. This information is now informing how Local 1000 advocates for inclusive contract language, safe workplaces, and affirming healthcare coverage for all members.

Equally important, they used this national platform to build relationships with LGBTQ+ organizations, legal experts, and elected leaders who are actively shaping the future of civil rights in this country. These connections open new avenues for policy support and community partnership that benefit not just LGBTQ+ members, but all working people who are vulnerable to discrimination, economic insecurity, or systemic inequality.

Nicole and Jared’s participation reaffirmed Local 1000’s role as a leader among public sector unions in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Their presence at the conference showed that Local 1000’s commitment to justice doesn’t stop at the bargaining table, it extends into the broader movements for human rights and social change. By investing in events like this, our union strengthens its capacity to protect all members and ensures LGBTQ+ workers are seen, heard, and valued.
