This week, your Unit 14 Bargaining Team gave the State a firsthand look at our work. On Tuesday, May 5, we hosted a full worksite tour at our Office of State Publishing facility in West Sacramento, where the majority of Unit 14 members work. State representatives saw firsthand what our jobs actually look like day to day — from the differences between classifications, to the complexity of operating industrial equipment, to the critical role our members play in keeping state operations running.
They also saw something just as important: a skilled, tight-knit workforce with deep experience and long-term commitment to the job.
This is the second consecutive contract where we’ve hosted a tour like this, and it made a real impact last bargaining cycle. We’re building on that momentum as we continue fighting for what we deserve. At the bargaining table, your team also made progress on key issues impacting Unit 14 members:
- Classification Reviews Moving Forward
Conversations with the State were productive, and we are cautiously optimistic as we push to move several classification studies forward into the new contract - Printing Trade Specialist Trainee (PTST)
Progress was made in discussions to continue this classification study into the next contract, focusing on issues like out-of-class work, fair pay and career pathways - Graphic Design Series
Pushing for a long-overdue classification study, as members take on increasingly advanced work that is not reflected in current pay - Digital Print Operator (DPO)
Highlighting how the scope of work has expanded over time and ensuring that evolution is recognized in future improvements - Staffing and Vacancy Concerns
Raising ongoing vacancy issues across classifications, especially in PTST roles, and the impact this has on workloads and operations
These priorities reflect the real issues members are facing on the job.
“The issues we’re fighting for at the table come directly from our members. What you shared in the bargaining survey is shaping this contract, and we’ll need that same support at the worksites as negotiations continue.”
— Robert Vega, Unit 14 Chair
