Involvement
Our union works to make a difference in the lives of our members at work and in the communities they live in.
We develop leaders to build a stronger union, and for many, becoming a job steward is the first step. Our Leadership Development Program for Stewards (LAPS) is a great first step to your union leadership.
Politics matter to the 96,000 state workers we represent. We work to elect lawmakers who share our union values and who pass laws that affect our jobs and our communities—including our union contract.
Check back on our website for new ways to get involved. We are always growing and invite you to join us!

Why Politics Matter
Politics matter because… Local 1000 is investing in your family’s future.
As state workers raising families in California, politics affect every aspect of our lives, including the rights, raises and benefits negotiated in our contract. Making politics work for you, your family and your community is important to us.
To effectively protect your rights, Local 1000 must actively engage in electing candidates who believe in—and stand up for—working families. It is important that we support leaders who are committed to a living wage, retirement security and affordable healthcare benefits at all levels of government from the president and Congress, to California’s governor and Legislature, all the way to school boards, city councils and county commissions.
Why This Matters to YOU
-
- Your salary is funded by the state budget—and one-third of that budget comes from federal dollars.
- Our union contract is law, but it’s only as strong as the funding that backs it. Every year, our wages and benefits must be renewed and approved through the state budget process.
- When federal programs get cut, state workers pick up the slack. That means higher caseloads, fewer resources, and more pressure on the frontlines.
- Funding cuts don’t just affect “other departments”—they hit healthcare, education, public safety, libraries, social services, and more. And they hit fast.
It’s already happening…
On April 2, 2025, the California State Library lost its federal funding after the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) was dismantled by executive order. 90% of its staff were placed on leave, and critical public resources were instantly jeopardized.

⚠️ What’s Happening Now
- Medicaid funding is at risk, threatening healthcare access and burdening state health programs.
- Education programs are being cut, including those that support schools, libraries, and public access to information.
- Workers’ rights and labor protections are under attack, including efforts to weaken union power and workplace safety.
- Immigration policy shifts are straining state resources, without federal support to match the demand.
We can’t afford to ignore this. If we don’t get involved, decisions will be made without us—and at our expense.

Federal Cuts Are Threatening Our State Jobs
As state workers, the decisions made by the current administration directly impact the work we do, the services we provide, and the paychecks we bring home. Whether you work behind a desk, in the field, or serving the public every day—your job is tied to politics in more ways than you might think.

Why is Political Engagement vital to our Members at the State Bar?
I'm Amy Valdez, Chair of the SEIU Local 1000 COPE Committee, with an important ask. Politicalengagement is vital to our members at the State Bar, as the fee bill, which authorizes and funds the State Bar, must be approved by the legislature, and signed into law by the...
