Apprentice Program to Offer New Opportunities for Unit 15 Custodians

SEIU Local 1000’s groundbreaking Apprentice Program will soon announce another upward mobility opportunity for our Unit 15 custodians.

The Custodial to Office Administration Apprenticeship will target three occupations: Office Technician, Personnel Specialist, and Staff Services Analyst. Details of the program will be announced in the near future, and the intent is to offer up to 33 apprentice positions spread across the three positions.

For the Department of General Services and Local 1000 alike, this is a long sought-after program, and for the first time, will offer a career path for our members who work as custodians.

The Custodial to Office Administration Apprentice will be designed with flexibility in mind, allowing members to promote if they are ready and meet Minimum Qualifications (MQ). It’s planned to be a “competency-based” program, which means participants could promote earlier than the nominal two-year program (if they achieve MQs), or they could receive additional training if they experience difficulty promoting.

This adds another branch to our Apprentice Program, which also includes opportunities in health care, information technology, and financial services.

We look to offer the program across the state, with an application period in the late spring, and a program launch in the fall of 2023.
