Correctional Wellness Team Elevates the Profession at National Conference in Boston
Boston, MA – May 31, 2025
The California Correctional Wellness Team made a strong impression at the recent “Elevate Our Profession” and National Medal of Honor Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. This two-day event brought together correctional professionals from across the country to focus on wellness, innovation, and recognition in the field.
Day One: A Deep Dive into Wellness
The conference opened with a powerful keynote from Andrew “Sully” Sullivan, a former Navy SEAL from SEAL Team Six, who shared his personal journey and emphasized the importance of prioritizing mental health. “We must prioritize our people as highly as we prioritize the mission,” Sullivan said, earning a standing ovation.
Participants then rotated through three dynamic wellness workshops:
-
Resilience & Boxing – Building mental toughness through physical empowerment
-
Defending Your Mind – Strategies for maintaining mental clarity and emotional resilience
-
You Are What You Eat – Practical nutrition tips focused on small, sustainable lifestyle changes
Members of the Correctional Wellness Team took part in all sessions, gaining new tools to support their colleagues and strengthen workplace wellness back home.
Day Two: Innovation and the Future of Corrections
The second day of the conference focused on industry transformation. While many attendees noted that current systems are outdated and often overlook non-custody staff, conversations sparked hope for inclusive modernization.
Conference highlights included:
-
Mindfulness in the Workplace – Simple techniques to stay grounded and reduce stress
-
Nutrition and Movement – Encouragement to make healthier choices and stay active
-
Tech Innovations – Ideas for implementing free wellness programs on staff tablets, modeled after successful inmate programming
These discussions highlighted the need for greater equity, access, and forward-thinking solutions in correctional environments.
Honoring Excellence
The conference concluded with the prestigious National Medal of Honor Ceremony, where two California team members were proudly nominated for national recognition. Their nominations reflect a deep commitment to service and a passion for improving the lives of those working in corrections.
The Correctional Wellness Team continues to lead by example—championing mental and physical health, advocating for innovation, and uplifting the profession for all who serve.
