Correctional Supervising Cooks in the CTC kitchen at Lancaster recently stopped an improper work condition change that would have required them to escort inmate workers to and from their worksite. This duty has always been performed by Correctional Officers.
The issue began when the cooks contacted DLC 707 President Sunday about the sudden change. Sunday immediately started working with the members to understand what management was trying to implement. He then reached out to the Unit 15 Chair for insight and support.
Once the Chair met with the cooks and reviewed the situation, he requested and received the letter of expectations outlining the proposed change. After confirming that the new requirement conflicted with established duties and long standing practice, he issued a cease and desist letter right away.
Within an hour, management pulled the change and restored the status quo. Correctional Officers continue to escort inmate workers, and the cooks were not forced to take on duties outside their classification.
This was a strong and fast win for the Correctional Supervising Cooks at Lancaster. It happened because members stood together, raised the issue quickly, and worked directly with their DLC leadership.Congratulations to the team for staying united and protecting your working conditions.
Congratulations DLC 707, your work was/is inspiring and motivating. It’s one thing to be okey-dokey by the inmates, that’s their job in life. But it’s another to be okey-dokey by our management and leadership. I applied President Sunday, we’re taking an we’re taking the ball by the horns, astute reactions, and support of the CSCs. I also salute the CSC staff for working together to address workplace and equities, they always start out small and innocuous, and left unattended will change the entire work structure of the day. Great catch you guys.
