January Update for Bargaining Unit 3

This message is to bring you up to date on what is happening in the Bargaining Unit. Here are a few things for your information.

First, a shout out to Heather DeFelice, Christina Calacugan, and the folks in the Department of Education’s Southern Diagnostic Center for their work in organizing the voices in the diagnostic centers located in Fremont, Fresno and Los Angeles.

SB 825 Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Senators Nancy Skinner (District 9) and James Beall (District 15) have sponsored a bill (SB825), proposed to them by the California Building Trades Council, directing the CDCR to establish a pre-apprenticeship program.

However, a little research revealed that CDCR reached out to the Trades Council, asking them to propose this to the Senators.

Unit 15 Upward Mobility Task Force Meeting

On June 15, 2018, the Bargaining Unit 15 Upward Mobility Task Force met with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and the Employment Development Department (EDD) to discuss the departments’ upward mobility programs for Unit 15 employees.

Garth Underwood, a Correctional Supervising Cook (CSC) in CDCR led the team with support from Eric Murray, CSC in CDCR, Ellis Washington, Custodian in EDD, Eric Colón, CSC in CDCR and Maria Patterson, Chair of Unit 15.

Unit 15 Statewide Food Service Workers Task Force

On June 8, 2018, the Unit 15 Food Service Workers team launched their Task Force meetings with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), the California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA).

Proud Members Supporting Pride Month
Local 1000 Lavender Committee Building Stronger Community Bonds

Our members joined with our union’s Lavender Committee and more than 17,000 Sacramento-area residents to celebrate LGBT Pride month with a parade and festival on June 10. Across the state and the nation, events like this one celebrate and honor the LGBT culture and pride and the decades-long struggle to overcome prejudice and to earn the natural right for individuals to be accepted for who they are.
