Local 1000 Human Rights Committees get a Boost from Board of Directors
Ten different Local 1000 Human Rights Committees are at the forefront of our efforts to create a good life for our members at work and at home, and for all Californians. It’s the mandate of our Local 1000 Purpose Statement, and the member-leaders who volunteer are leading the fight for social, economic, and environmental justice.
CDCR announces next facility closures
SEIU Local 1000 learned this week that the planned closure dates for two California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Institutions have been officially announced.
California City Correctional Facility will be scheduled to close in March 2024 and Chuckawalla Valley State Prison will be scheduled to close in March 2025.
SEIU Local 1000 Board of Directors Meeting Recap from December 3 & 4
On December 3 and 4, our SEIU Local 1000 Board of Directors held a virtual meeting over the weekend to continue their work in governing our Union. The Board is comprised of 65, member-elected representatives: 51 District Labor Council Presidents, 11 Bargaining Unit Chairs, 3 Statewide Officers and the Board Chair.
The meeting included a series of reports from Local 1000’s staff: Department Directors informing our leadership about recent progress and future plans in our political, representation, organizing, research, legal, and contract departments.
News and Notes from Board Chair Bill Hall
While most of us recently enjoyed a peaceful and joy-filled Thanksgiving, we must still be mindful that the past month has brought multiple mass shootings in the United States. When these events take place at workplaces and injure workers, the impact on those employees and their families is devastating. More must be done to address the crisis in mental health that can reside at the center of these horrific events.
Providing Real Representation for our Members is a Local 1000 Priority
Our contract contains hundreds of provisions that govern our wages, working conditions, and benefits. Those hard-won rights are protected and enforced by members and staff, including our frontline Job Stewards, our Member Resource Call Center, and our Union Resource Center.
If you have an issue or believe your rights are being violated, contact your workplace job steward and let’s work together to solve it. Here are some recent examples of members working with their Union to win!
