Our groundbreaking Apprenticeship program has lifted another group of SEIU Local 1000 members on a path to career improvement, this time, in the Information Technology’s Cybersecurity discipline.

12 apprentices, from nine different state departments, began the training program in 2021. On Sept. 25^th, they graduated their program and are now well equipped for their new careers as cybersecurity professionals to help protect the State of California and its infrastructure from digital attacks.

This week, we announced that our SEIU Local 1000 Board of Directors has voted to make some bold and important changes in our governance structure.

It’s a revolutionary step for Local 1000, one that will allow us to more effectively serve the 96,000 state workers we represent.

Our contract has hundreds of sections that govern our wages, benefits, and working conditions, and section 12.4 – Commute Program – details the increase in reimbursement. We won an increase from 75% to 100% reimbursement of your commute costs, up to the monthly exclusion amount set by the IRS.

Upward mobility is a union value, and our groundbreaking Apprentice program is offering three new opportunities for our members currently working as Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs). We’re offering our second application period for the LVN-to-RN Pre-apprenticeship at three different schools, plus two new LVN-to-RN Apprenticeships, one at Riverside City College and one at San Joaquin Delta College.

Next week, our SEIU Local 1000 Board of Directors will hold a five-day meeting, with a focus on debating and voting on changes to our union governance.

The Local 1000 Board of Directors will meet in Sacramento Aug. 18-22. The Board is comprised of member-elected representatives—51 District Labor Council (DLC) Presidents, 10 Bargaining Unit (BU) Chairs, and 3 statewide officers.

Governor Newsom has signed the bill (SB 148) that funds our compensation and benefits for the next three years, which means we officially have a fully-executed contract with the State.

Our bargaining cycle, which began earlier this year and included town halls, bargaining surveys, and more than four months of intense negotiations, has now come full circle.
