Corrections Supervising Cook (CSC) Michael Garcia Peters has dedicated nearly eight years to serving the staff and incarcerated population at Mule Creek State Prison. But his commitment extends far beyond the kitchen. In May 2023, Michael stepped into a new role as Union Steward, driven by a clear mission: to protect his fellow CSCs from mistreatment and ensure management upholds the hard-won rights outlined in their contract.
“I became a steward because I saw how important it was to have someone who would stand up for our team,” Michael says. “I wanted to make sure no one was being taken advantage of.”
His leadership and advocacy didn’t go unnoticed. In January 2025, Michael was elected as the DLC 769 Bargaining Unit 15 District Bargaining Unit Representative (DBUR), a role that allows him to represent CSCs not just at Mule Creek, but across multiple institutions and departments.
“The encouragement from my fellow CSCs is what pushed me to take on the DBUR role,” he shares. “Their support means everything to me, and it’s what keeps me going.”
Michael sees his union work as a powerful opportunity to educate others about the value of union membership and the importance of understanding the contract. Whether he’s answering questions, resolving issues, or simply showing up in solidarity, Michael is a consistent presence and a trusted advocate.
“Being part of the Union gives me a chance to help others and make a real difference,” he says. “I’m proud to represent my fellow CSCs, and I’ll continue to do so for as long as I’m with the state.”
Michael Garcia Peters exemplifies what it means to lead with integrity, compassion, and strength. His dedication is a reminder that when we stand together, we can protect our rights and build a better workplace for everyone.
Garcia is an asset to the state. Mule Creek is lucky to have him. Great person, who leads by example and is always willing to go the extra mile. A real pleasure to be around
