SEIU Local 1000 met with the state on December 8, 2025, and, like last month, the state was ill-prepared and didn’t have a counterproposal or anything tangible to offer our union. The state also cancelled our next meeting, which was scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, 2025, and would not confirm our scheduled meeting for December 17, 2025. The Chairs for Units 17 and 20 held the state accountable to provide a plan of action to address “the over twenty years” of MOT health and safety concerns.
As Unit 17 Chair Vanessa Seastrong put it: “Over twenty years of vacancy problems and over-reliance on Mandatory Overtime have created unsafe conditions for both workers and patients—and the State continues to ignore the root cause: low pay and poor retention. Healthcare workers statewide are leaving for better-paying private sector jobs because the State refuses to offer competitive wages or fair scheduling practices. Until the State fixes these issues, the staffing crisis will continue.”
