Rose Guidel-Escobar Keeps the Poor People’s Campaign Moving Forward

In 1968, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his allies called for a “revolution of values” in America as they built a broad movement to unite poor communities across the country. This vision has never been more relevant. The COVID-19 pandemic has had impacts on everyone, but the brunt has been borne by working people everywhere. Rose Gudiel-Escobar, a SEIU Local 1000 member leader, has been fighting for those workers with the ‪Poor People’s Campaign for years, even before the pandemic magnified this inequality. Know Your Rights – Paid Holidays in our Contract

Your Local 1000 Union contract contains hundreds of articles governing your hard-earned rights, including wages, benefits and working conditions. This overview explains how our 96,000 represented state workers are entitled to 11 observed holidays and how you’re paid for those holidays should you be required to work on one of those days.

Premium Holidays 

Employees who work any of these six holidays will be paid at 1.5 times their regular rate of pay and will also earn up to 8 hours of holiday credit.

Organizing at Pelican Bay State Prison Continues

Nurses at Pelican Bay State Prison (PBSP) have come together as a team to take a stand against the toxic work environment and to establish a workplace at which everyone feels comfortable and safe. After years of pushing to establish a Joint Labor Management Committee (JLMC), members took action and got the attention of CDCR and CCHCS HQ, which in turn brought management to the table. However, as Bargaining Unit 20 DBUR Laura Slavec indicated, this measure hasn’t proven effective at solving the issues as yet.
