Throughout April and May, our Union team met and conferred with The California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board regarding their plans to implement return to office guidance requiring employees to work in-office four days a week starting July 1st, 2025.

In our discussions our team raised many concerns from our represented employees that are impacted by the increase in days working in-office after multiple years of successfully working remotely. Top priority our meeting was discussing flexibility. We learnt that scheduling return-to-office days will all be considered on a case-by-case basis. Therefore, talk to your supervisor IMMEDIATELY about your scheduled in-office days.

The State reassured that employees will still be granted Reasonable Accommodations and Ergonomic evaluations when requested. To learn how to request accommodation, CUIAB directed employees to visit The Bench for reference. The CUIAB ergonomic coordinator is Victor Saldana.

CUIAB did not confirm exact exemptions they are willing to consider, but they do plan on honoring Governor Newsom’s guidance to allow an exemption to the 4-day RTO order for employees who reside greater than 50 miles away from their assigned duty station and had a signed telework agreement in place no later than March 3, 2025.

Additionally, we learnt that employees with a 4/10 alternate work week schedule will not be eligible to be able to work remotely. Employees with a 9/8/80 work schedule are eligible for a telework day every other week. Should an employee be interested in an AWW work week schedule, one may be requested by CUIAB employees by submitting a request to their direct supervisor, who will grant or deny the employees’ request. If granted, the request will be sent to CUIAB Executive Management for final approval or denial.

This table will remain open, and we will continue to address issues as they arise. Please see our SEIU Local 1000 website to find out how you can get more involved in our Union’s fight to retain telework for our represented employees.
