SEIU Local 1000 Member Leader Toolkit

President Anica Walls announced that Local 1000’s Board of Directors has officially authorized a strike vote. Your members have been asking, you have been preparing, and we have all been working toward this moment. Below is where we go from here, so you can prepare your members for this historic move.

Please note: This toolkit is a resource designed to be used by SEIU Local 1000 member leaders ONLY. Rather than share this page directly, we encourage leaders to use these tools to start conversations and engage with your coworkers. Please do not share or distribute this page.

The Message:

“The state has committed an Unfair Labor Practice by refusing to bargain in good faith. Our members are voting to authorize an Unfair Practice Strike to demand that the State respect our rights, respect our work and bargain in good faith. We have and will continue to fight for what we deserve!”

What’s Coming:

Members vote to authorize a strike. Only members can vote.

Voting is electronic and can be done at any time from September 9th– October 7th by visiting our voting page on our website: https://search.seiu1000.org/strikevote.php

Voting will be several weeks long to allow everyone time to participate. Use this window to assess your members (Will be there, Unsure, Can’t attend, etc.).
All represented employees should commit to the strike line strike. Share the Commitment Form with your coworkers and see that they commit to the strike. Submit paper forms to your organizer or log them yourself in Union Connect (uc.seiu1000.org). Members and non-members can commit to attend the strike line.

What You Do Next:

Assess your coworkers. Have informal conversations with your coworkers to see how ready they are to take action with their union. Refer to the Strike Conversation Guide, or ask your Organizer if you need help getting a conversation started. Enter your assessments/conversations in Union Connect.

Make a plan. Decide who/when/how you will contact coworkers. Use Union Connect to build your list.

Go one-on-one. One-on-one conversations are always preferable to mass emails — they let you build trust and follow up with the people you’ve spoken to.

Join a phonebank. Plan to attend a phonebank to call members across the state and inform and invite them to this historic action. Phonebank dates will be released soon.

What a Strike Actually Looks Like:

Thousands of members gathered together to chant, sing, protest, and honor each other in purpled-up, unified solidarity.

Members and leaders take on specific roles and hold intentional spaces.

Not all strike actions will look the same.

We should all plan to attend where we are able.
